The International Students For Liberty Conference (ISFLC) is truly an international event. From the first ISFLC almost nine years ago to today, the conference has always had strong international representation and we hope that this year’s will be no different. To that end, I’ve compiled a few tips and reminders to international students.
First, don’t be discouraged by travel costs. International travel can be expensive, but students raise thousands of dollars every year to make it to ISFLC. I encourage you to do the same. A great first step is to approach libertarians and think tanks in your local area. You can visit the Atlas Network’s global directory of think tanks and find the think tank closest to you. Often times think tank staffers, donors, or other affiliates will be happy to support libertarian students if you just ask. You can also approach your local SFL leaders who may have fundraising experience and connections to local libertarians. Each regional SFL website has the contact information of local leaders; you can find the right website for you here.
Second, we all know how bureaucratic and slow the visa application process can be, so make sure you submit your travel visa application as soon as possible. If you need an invitation letter to help obtain a visa, please contact your local SFL leader (see above).
Third, if you’re having trouble finding accommodations or a roommate for the conference, please visit the ISFLC Hotel and Travel Facebook Group to connect with other students.
Fourth, plan ahead for travel in the U.S. You’ll need to bring outlet converters and adapters in order to use electronics in the U.S. and will have to exchange your native currency for US dollars. Power adapters and currency exchanges will be available at most airports if you cannot address them before you leave.
Finally, don’t forget to register for the conference. Registration is only $15 for international students, but you must register by February 1st in order to attend. I hope to see you in February!
